Detroit: The city where no one has car insurance

August 2, 2013 by Steven M. Gursten

Attorney Steven M. Gursten was featured in a story on carinsurance.com about the insurance crisis in Detroit, where No Fault auto insurance is so expensive that drivers go without and put themselves at great risk if they’re injured in a crash.

Gursten said it’s a matter of putting food on the table for Detroiters who are struggling to make ends meet, but it comes with great consequences.

According to Gursten, drivers who are uninsured and get injured in car accidents are not allowed to seek any compensation from at-fault drivers, even if the at-fault drivers were drunk or texting while driving.

“I can’t tell you how many people just lost their husband or wife in an accident, and there’s nothing I can do for them. I think it’s a civil justice and a civil rights issue,” Gursten said.
