#SafeDriveSummer: Take the Pledge To Drive Safely This Summer

July 26, 2022 by Steven M. Gursten

Take the pledge to drive safely this summer. #SafeDriveSummer

#SafeDriveSummer is our campaign to inspire Michigan drivers to make a pledge to drive safely this summer. The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, account for more than 30% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Michigan for the entire year. If we educate and work together, we can save lives.

To be a part of #SafeDriveSummer, we invite drivers to post a pledge for how they plan to drive safely this summer on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Drivers with the best pledge will win one of two $100 Mastercard gift cards. We will select and announce the first winner and winning pledge in August and the second winner and winning pledge in September.

What is Michigan Auto Law’s #SafeDriveSummer?

The goal of Michigan Auto Law’s #SafeDriveSummer campaign is to raise awareness about the most dangerous time of year to drive in Michigan. Our hope is that together we can prevent car accidents and save lives. Michigan traffic fatalities have been on the rise in recent years, and the 100-day period between Memorial Day and Labor Day has consistently proven to be especially deadly for drivers.

SafeDriveSummer gives drivers who are 16 years of age or older and who have a valid driver’s license the opportunity to compete to win one of two $100 Mastercard gift cards.

To be eligible to win, we invite you to do the following:

  • Follow @MichiganAutoLaw on Facebook and/or @official_miautolaw on Instagram
  • Keep an eye out for our #SafeDriveSummer contest post and reply in the comments section of our post with your pledge on how you plan to drive safely this summer

To determine the best #SafeDriveSummer pledges, pledges will be judged and evaluated based on the following factors: (1) ability to persuade others to drive safely; (2) ability to catch people’s attention; and (3) creativity.

We will announce the best #SafeDriveSummer pledges and the winners of the gift cards in August and September on Michigan Auto Law’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

#SafeDriveSummer tips to prevent fatal car crashes and save lives

#SafeDriveSummer tips to keep you and the family safe on the roads include refraining from the following dangerous driving behaviors: (1) distracted driving; (2) driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; (3) drowsy driving; (4) speeding; and (5) not wearing a seat belt. All of these can significantly increase your chances of being involved in an otherwise preventable car accident.

Here is more information about the increased risk of being involved in a car accident if you or a loved one engages in any of these dangerous – and potentially deadly – driving actions:

  • Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to crash. (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute)
  • Drivers are 12 times more likely to crash if they are dialing a handheld cell phone while driving. (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute)
  • “Driving while talking on cell phones – handheld and hands-free – increases risk of injury and property damage crashes fourfold.” (National Safety Council)
  • Drivers with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05 to 0.079 are 7 times more likely to be in a fatal crash and 6 to 17 times more likely to be killed than sober drivers. (MADD, Studies on the Effectiveness of .05 BAC)
  • Drowsy driving – “Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving, and teens have the highest risk.” (AAA)
  • “Excessive speed” was a factor in 18.5% of all car accident fatalities in Michigan in 2020. (Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, 2020, Fact Sheets, “Speeding”)
  • Wear seat belts – NHTSA data shows wearing a safety belt can reduce the risk of crash injuries by 50 percent.
