What Wayne County intersections had the most car crashes in Michigan over the last year?

Review our attorneys’ top 10 list of the streets in Wayne County, MI where you’re most likely to be involved in a car accident

As is perhaps fitting for the most populated county in Michigan, Wayne County also has the most car accidents. Today our attorneys are sharing the intersections and street corners in Wayne County that had the most car crashes in the state in 2015. Our hope is that by sharing this information, we can encourage motorists to drive more safely in these dangerous intersections, and help prevent some of these wrecks.

Our attorneys worked with the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit, which collects motor vehicle accident reports from local law enforcement in Detroit and surrounding cities, to identify all of the Wayne County intersections that had the most reported overall automobile accidents last year. These include any intersection that has a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout.

Check out the list below to see if you drive through any of these areas, and please take extra care on these roads:

Intersections include any accident that occurred within 250 feet of any intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to highways.

Michigan Auto Law would like to sincerely thank the Michigan State Police for its support in our endeavor to help make our roads safer for Michigan drivers.

Before we dive into some of the specific intersections, keep in mind, the above list includes total crashes and does not take into consideration injuries or fatalities.

No. 1: Ford Road and Haggerty Road – Canton

This area has consistently had some of the highest numbers of overall crashes and injury accidents in the state over the past five years. Road segments along Ford Road in this area also have the highest number of overall car accidents in the entire state in 2015. With 116 total crashes, 34 of which resulted in injuries, this intersection continues its notorious trend as a high -crash spot in Michigan. Unfortunately, construction projects to alleviate the congestion in the area are likely still years away. Please continue to use caution driving on Ford Road between Lilley and I-275, especially on weekends and during rush hour.

No. 2: Ford Road and Lilley Road – Canton

Less than a half mile west, we have the second highest intersection for car accidents in Wayne County. With 89 car accidents last year, these high numbers continue to worry us, as Ford Road intersections make up half of the top 10 list of high-crash intersections in the entire county. Try your best to use caution along Ford Road at all points in your travels.

No. 3: Telegraph Road and Schoolcraft Road – Redford Township

Anyone who’s driven through the I-96 and Telegraph area knows how busy it can get at all times of the day. With the on/off ramps to I-96, as well as Telegraph’s multi-lane, high speed roads, accidents are likely to occur at this intersection. Though surprisingly, this area had a much lower amount of injury accidents with only eight this past year – far below average levels for an intersection this size.

No. 4: Dix Highway and M-39/Southfield Freeway – Lincoln Park

As we’ve seen with many other high-crash intersections on our lists, high speed roads with many lanes of traffic, such as the Southfield Freeway, result in a large amount of accidents when they intersect other roads in busy suburban areas. This is the case in Lincoln Park, where this intersection had 80 car accidents last year.

No. 5: Ford Road and Wayne Road – Westland

Once again, we see Ford Road on the list. But this time instead of Canton, there’s another high-crash intersection in Westland. Wayne Road sees quite a lot of commercial vehicles, which may be a factor in why this particular area had 71 crashes last year. Again, use caution along busy Ford Road and avoid going over the 45 mph speed limit.

Where’s Detroit on the list of the intersections with the most auto accidents?

You may be surprised to see that none of the top 10 (or even top 20) intersections with the most reported car accidents are in the city of Detroit.

This has actually been the case for several years now. It is likely due to several factors, although safer drivers in the City of Detroit is not one of them. What is more likely is that there continues to be under-reporting of car accidents, especially with approximately 50% of Detroiters driving without mandatory auto insurance. It also is likely due to overall lower traffic volumes, especially compared to more congested areas such as those listed in Canton, and lower speed limits in more urban areas. Stay tuned for a separate blog post from our attorneys that focuses just on the streets in Detroit that had the highest number of motor vehicle crashes for 2015.

We’d also love to hear your feedback: Do you drive through any of these Wayne County intersections as part of your daily commute? Why do you think there are so many car accidents at these locations?
