Before our lawyers dive into some of the specific intersections, please keep in mind, the above list includes total crashes and does not take into consideration injuries or fatalities.
No 1: State Street and Ellsworth – Ann Arbor/Pittsfield Township
This roundabout was the No. 1 intersection in 2014 for car accidents with 171 – the most in the entire state. We’re happy to see that 2015 had a much lower volume of 114 overall crashes. This intersection was changed into a roundabout in 2013 and got a lot of media coverage for having such a big increase in accidents in 2014. It appears drivers have gotten more comfortable navigating this new type of intersection, as there were only three reported injuries in 2015.
Hopefully, drivers are more comfortable with these new roundabouts as many more are coming to the area. Visit our Roundabout Resource Center to learn where new roundabouts are popping up in Washtenaw County as well as southeast Michigan.
No. 2: Hogback/Carpenter Road and Washtenaw Avenue – Pittsfield Township
Any intersection that’s close to a major freeway interchange tends to see a higher amount of crashes than others. This is likely the reason why this busy corner had 63 accidents last year – seven of those resulting in injuries. Add traffic from WCC and the Sheriff’s Department/Courts, and the intersection likely sees a high number of vehicles going through it every day.
No. 3: Michigan Avenue and US-23 – Pittsfield Township
Another busy interchange in the area had 54 auto accident last year and 13 injuries – the highest number of injuries of any intersection in Washtenaw County in 2015. This total number includes all on/off ramps to the freeway, as well as crashes that occurred on Michigan Avenue as it passes above US-23.
No. 4: Carpenter Road and Ellsworth Road – Pittsfield Township
Another factor that seems to increase the number of crashes at intersections is the amount of traffic drawn to the area from local businesses. With a movie theater and numerous large retailers including Target and Meijer located at this intersection, traffic congestion is likely a contributor to this spot coming in at No. 4 on the list.
No. 5: Huron Parkway and Washtenaw Avenue – Ann Arbor
Topping out our No. 5 is another intersection off busy Washtenaw Avenue, where a higher speed limit of 45 mph coupled with more busy retailers affects traffic. Please use caution in all of these local areas when driving.
