$5.6 million Macomb County jury verdict for pedestrian car accident case

The Macomb Daily covers Steve Gursten’s pedestrian car accident case that resulted in a $5.6 million verdict in Macomb County. In Broeren v. Bates, a man was run over by a friend’s pickup truck on a hunting trip. Broeren, an engineer, had many knee surgeries and traumatic brain injury from the accident.

For his pain and suffering, the jury allotted $2.75 million for non-economic damages, $1.88 million for economic damages and $1.02 million for loss of consortium. The verdict in Broeren v. Bates was the highest-reported jury verdict for a Michigan auto accident in 2008, according to published year-end verdicts and settlements reports.
