How Many Accidents Are Caused By Semi Trucks?

Nationally, there were approximately 536,424 police-reported crashes involving large trucks (including semi-trucks) in 2022, the most recent year for which full federal data is available. Large trucks accounted for about 5% of all vehicles involved in injury crashes and nearly 10% of vehicles involved in fatal crashes that year. (NHTSA, Large Trucks: 2022 Data)

In 2022 (the most recent year for which data is publicly available), 5,279 fatal accidents were caused by semi trucks in the U.S. As a result, 5,936 people lost their lives. That same year, there were 114,000 injury accidents caused by semi trucks, resulting in 160,000 people being injured. (FMCSA Large Truck And Bus Crash Facts)

But being involved in a crash isn’t the same as causing one. Determining how many accidents semi trucks actually cause requires looking at fault and causation data, not just involvement counts.

To address how many crashes are caused by tractor trailers, it is important to note that a majority of these crashes are brought on by drivers of the passenger car — a point examined more closely below. These fatal crashes account for 13.4% of all fatal accidents nationwide. The most common reasons for these types of crashes include speeding, driver distraction, failing to yield, and improper lane use.

Who Is At Fault: Passenger Vehicles vs. Truck Drivers

The most comprehensive federal study on this question is the FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study. In two-vehicle crashes between a large truck and a passenger vehicle, truck drivers were assigned the critical reason for the crash in 44% of cases — meaning the passenger vehicle driver was the more likely at-fault party in the remaining crashes.

In other words, while tractor trailers are involved in roughly 500,000 crashes a year (NHTSA, Large Trucks: 2022 Data), when a semi truck collides with a passenger vehicle, the truck driver is assigned the critical reason for the crash in less than half of those cases.

Common Causes Of Accidents When The Semi Truck Driver Is At Fault

When the semi truck driver caused the accident and is the at-fault party, negligence usually stems from the size, weight, and operational demands of the vehicle. According to FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study, the most frequent causes include:

Driver Fatigue: Long hours behind the wheel or skipped rest breaks can lead a driver to nod off or lose focus, often tied to violations of federal Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
Distracted Driving: Cell phone use, GPS adjustments, or eating behind the wheel pull a driver’s attention away from a vehicle that requires far more reaction time than a passenger car.
Improper Loading: Cargo that’s overloaded or not properly secured can shift mid-drive, throwing off the truck’s balance and causing a rollover or loss of control.
Speeding and Aggressive Driving: Because semi-trucks need significantly more distance to stop, driving too fast for road or weather conditions dramatically raises the risk of a rear-end or jackknife collision.
Equipment Failure: Skipped maintenance can lead to blown tires, failed brakes, or malfunctioning lights — all of which are especially dangerous given the size of the vehicle.

Impact and Fatalities

Because semi-trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, accidents involving them are significantly more devastating than typical passenger-car collisions. In 2022, 70% of the people who died in crashes involving large trucks were occupants of the other, smaller vehicle — not occupants of the truck itself. (NHTSA, Large Trucks: 2022 Data)

Fatal accidents caused by semi trucks nationwide

Of the 39,221 fatal motor vehicle crashes that occurred nationwide in 2022 (NHTSA), 5,279 of them were accidents caused by semi-trucks. Those fatal truck crashes resulted in 5,936 deaths.

Michigan fatal tractor trailer crash statistics

There were 104 tractor trailers involved in the 1,012 fatal motor vehicle crashes that occurred in Michigan in 2024, according to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts. Those fatal crashes resulted in 110 people being killed. (Michigan Traffic Crash Facts)

Michigan semi truck injury crashes

There were 2,706 tractor trailers involved in the 51,202 personal injury-related motor vehicle crashes that occurred in Michigan in 2024, according to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts. Those personal injury crashes resulted in 3,613 people being injured. (Michigan Traffic Crash Facts)

What is the fatality rate for accidents caused by semi trucks?

The fatality rate for tractor trailer-involved crashes nationwide in 2022 was 34.5% higher than the overall fatality rate for all motor vehicle crashes. In Michigan in 2024, the fatality rate for tractor trailer-involved crashes was 50% higher than the overall fatality rate for all motor vehicle crashes.

In 2022, the national fatality rate for tractor trailer-involved fatal crashes was 1.79 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by large trucks, whereas the overall fatality rate for all fatal crashes according to NHTSA was 1.33 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by all motor vehicles.

In 2024 in Michigan, the fatal crash rate for tractor trailers was 1.5 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled compared to the overall fatal crash rate of 1.0 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

The most common “driver-related factor” in fatal accidents caused by semi trucks were:

Speeding of any kind
Careless driving
Distraction/Inattention
Impairment
Failure to yield right of way
Vision Obscured
Improper Lane Usage
Failure to Obey Traffic Signals

Unable to stop in an assured clear distance: 1,515 crashes; 9 fatal crashes; and 332 injury crashes
Failing to yield and disregarding traffic control signals: 1,185 crashes; 6 fatal crashes; and 295 injury crashes
Speeding: 634 crashes; 4 fatal crashes; and 127 in injury crashes
Improper lane use: 925 crashes; 0 in fatal crashes; and 68 injury crashes
Careless/negligent driving: 313 crashes; 1 fatal crash; and 68 injury crashes

I was coming home from work during traffic time and had been stopped at the red light on a June sunny day when I was rear ended by a detached wood chipper. If I could give more stars I would. I was struck head on by another driver and was left with many issues. My husband was killed in an automobile accident involving a gravel hauler truck on the freeway. The left front steer tire of the gravel hauler blew on I-75 near the Rouge River bridge, and the truck hit my husband’s car, trapping him between the retaining wall and the gravel hauler. While traveling in the Midwest, I was rear ended on a Michigan Freeway. Myself and countless others were at a standstill in construction traffic. Upon the arrival of Law Enforcement, I was advised that the individual who hit me had no insurance and unbeknownst to me Michigan is a “No Fault State,” at the time and had no idea what this meant.

During the next several months I attempted to handle matters on my own with Doctors, X-Rays, MRI’s, Physical Therapy, Insurance, Bills, etc. Finally, it became apparent that even “I was out of my league” and needed legal assistance. Over the course of five months, I was highly referred to and represented by another Michigan Attorney, who shall remain nameless. This Attorney made countless promises and commitments, until I discovered he never followed through on filing even one piece of paperwork on my behalf. This inept Attorney was severely chastised & promptly dismissed.

At this point, I began doing internet research to find “the Best Michigan Auto Accident Lawyer.” The first firm that came up in my search was Michigan Auto Law. At 8:04 PM EST on a Tuesday evening I sent an email to Michigan Auto Law’s Attorney Steven Gursten. Very unexpectedly, I received a “personalized response,” from Attorney Gursten at 8:13 PM EST. Nine Minutes Later, Steven let me know he was in meetings all day on Wednesday; but he would have an Attorney from his firm call me the next day.

Odd but true, Attorney Jeff Bussell called and emailed me on Wednesday. Jeff Bussell and I exchanged over 50 emails between that Wednesday and Friday; doing my initial intake and contract for representation. Unfortunately, during this time I was apprised that my former Attorney was in fact so incompetent that we were approaching a Statute of Limitations to file any legal action. I’m sharing this very prompt and proficient interaction with Attorneys Gursten and Bussell, as this is not my over 40 personal years of experience with Attorneys within any area of expertise….No One ever responds to a prospective new client like this!!! NEVER!

Thank God Michigan Auto Law agreed to take my case and began their very hands on & caring representation. If I had stayed with the other Attorney, I could have easily lost all my rights and any ability to acquire several very expensive, yet vital surgeries and additional medical treatment.

There was also no choice, I had to have these procedures or I would be permanently & severely impaired for the rest of what would easily be a very miserable existence. Having to bear the cost of these surgeries alone would have financially destroyed our family forever.

Subsequently, I was provided with a Litigation Team headed up by Attorney Kevin Seiferheld. In the 5+ years which I worked with the team, I could not be more pleased with my attorney Chris Hunter, or his support, Eileen Kelly and Jordan Barkley. They have truly become like family. My case lasted 5 years due to the significant injuries requiring time to stabilize/diagnose; then, COVID started and the courts shut down for much of two years. Chris was nothing but prompt pushing the case along.

When first injured, I searched online for the best law firm. With minimal digging, the choice was clear with Michigan Auto Law because of their reviews and the legitimacy of their website/advertisements. While many other practices appeared slimy from the start, even in reviews, Michigan Auto Law had an immediate upstanding appearance. It is clear they target a certain caliber of client with genuine meat to their case vs seeking misinformed clients who the lawyer can puppet their words (and life) into whatever they wish to make money. It’s unfortunate that those in a lawsuit need to be careful with the appearance of everything they do. There are a lot of lawyers who would have urged me to stay out of work far longer than I did in an effort to “milk” the case. Even with my doctors advising me to stay out, Chris fully supported my decision to return for my own mental state and chance to regain normalcy in my life. He cared about my quality of life and NEVER insinuated I should hold back on living just for the risk of appearing better off than I was. He recognized I was in a terrible place and needed any joy I could grab.

Likewise, many lawyers ask clients to milk the extent of injuries. I NEVER felt the slightest pressure from Chris to speak louder or more critically of my injuries. Never once did Chris encourage me to go to one of “his” doctors for hope of a diagnosis which leaned more severe than those by my selected doctors. I was proactive in researching my own care and so I did not need recommendations, but should I have wanted this, I am confident that he would have only named doctors to take the most action in improving my conditions. I received a settlement for my case. The amount was not life-changing nor did it “make-up” for all the suffering I had endured, but it did cover some adjustments needed in my life due to the accident so I am glad that I pursued. My case was complicated (multiple vehicles, multiple faults, none with sufficient liability coverages). My injuries were largely “invisible” (brain injury, PTSD, back pain, etc.). Chris was thorough in identifying insurance company spins and provided solid evidence to the contrary.

The unfair truth is that if you’re not missing a limb or out of work the rest of your life, it’s unlikely you will get millions of dollars for “pain”. The guidance provided by Michigan Auto Law all around was invaluable and another reason I am glad I pursued the case. I do not believe another company would have provided so much support through my recovery, which was chaotic balancing bills, insurance, doctors, work leave, etc.; all of which were firsts for me. Overall, my experience with this company was superb. From “on-boarding” to closure, I was impressed with the level of professionalism everyone, even secretaries answering the phones, had with me.

Beyond their professionalism, they are people. Chris would routinely call me, evenings and weekends, when he was aware that I may be distressed in any way (i.e. insurance denying medical benefits, difficult medical diagnosis, general stress about suit, etc.). He made it his top priority to help me through this difficult time, all while exemplifying a top-notch attorney whose years of experience are clear by all the tricks he employed to hold insurance companies.
