How does Forbes Magazine rate CURE Auto Insurance – which is the number one worst insurance company in New Jersey and the number two worst in Michigan – as one of the best in the U.S?

Two weeks ago I was driving to the Philadelphia airport to catch my flight home to Detroit. On the way, I saw a CURE Auto Insurance billboard that said CURE has been named one of the best auto insurance companies in the U.S. in 2025 by Forbes Magazine.
What the hell is Forbes Magazine thinking?
Here are some facts that Forbes seems to have completely ignored about CURE Auto Insurance:
- CURE is ranked the #1 worst auto insurance company in New Jersey based on consumer complaints.
- CURE is ranked #2 worst in Michigan based on consumer complaints (out of 82 auto insurance companies)!
- Front page headlines in Michigan newspapers about CURE taking customers’ vehicles and then denying their claims.
- Consumer complaints jumping 48.66% in 2024 in Michigan.
- CURE pushing through two big rate hikes in 2025 in Michigan.
Below are some important details that Forbes may want to consider when making its next list of the Best Insurance Companies next year.
CURE is #2 in consumer complaints in Michigan
In 2024, CURE Auto Insurance had the second-highest number of consumer complaints among Michigan’s 82 largest auto insurers, despite being only the 16th largest auto insurer in the state.
CURE also had the third-highest complaint ratio among Michigan’s 82 largest auto insurers in 2024. The complaint ratio measures complaints relative to the amount of premium dollars collected.
Of the consumer complaints filed against CURE in Michigan in 2024:
- 54% involved claims-handling issues
- 18% involved customer service issues
- 26% involved underwriting issues
Consumer complaints filed against CURE increased by 48.66% from 2023 to 2024.
CURE ranked as the #1 worst auto insurance company in New Jersey based on consumer complaints
In 2024, CURE ranked as the #1 worst auto insurance company in New Jersey based on consumer complaints among the state’s 24 largest auto insurers, despite being only the 13th largest auto insurer, according to the State of New Jersey Department of Banking & Insurance.
CURE also had the highest valid complaint ratio and the highest valid complaint index among New Jersey auto insurers, measuring complaints relative to company size and compared with competitors.
CURE increased its rates twice in 2025
Surprisingly, for the car insurance company that claims “everyone deserves affordable car insurance” at “a fair rate,” CURE pushed through two 25% rate increases against Michigan drivers in 2025.
On January 14, 2025, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) noted CURE’s request to increase its base rates for bodily injury, property protection insurance, and personal injury protection coverages by 25%, according to CURE’s Rate Filing Memo. (SERFF Tracking Number: CURE-134277328)
Then, on August 22, 2025, DIFS notes another CURE request to raise base rates for bodily injury, personal injury protection, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages by 25%, along with a 15% increase for property protection insurance by 15%, according to CURE’s Rate Filing Memo. (SERFF Tracking Number: CURE-134525746)
CURE’s handling of claims has drawn widespread scrutiny from Detroit newspapers, by Michigan’s Insurance Commissioner, and by the Michigan Senate
Following The Detroit News’ front page exposé on CURE’s handling of total loss claims in Michigan, Michigan’s Insurance Commissioner issued a Bulletin 2025-25-INS stating that “Declaring a vehicle a total loss and having the claimant transfer the vehicle’s title and then refusing to pay the claim” is an abusive and improper claims administration practice.
Michigan Public, in a story titled “Complaints mount against auto insurance company for using pretexts to avoid paying claims” wrote this:
“A car insurance company operating in Michigan is facing an onslaught of complaints by its customers, who say it’s using bait and switch tactics to avoid paying claims. Multiple customers contacted by the Detroit News said CURE Auto Insurance told them their claim was approved after their vehicle was totaled in a crash. CURE then had the customers relinquish title and possession of the car to the company – and afterwards, used pretexts to cancel their policies and not pay the claim.”
I’ve been speaking out about CURE because, in my personal opinion, it is the worst insurance company I have ever seen in my 30 years as an auto accident attorney and as an insurance lawyer.
CURE is actually trying to sue me and my law firm right now over a blog post I wrote about it. I say “trying” because we believe CURE’s claims are meritless and we have filed a motion asking the Court to dismiss the lawsuit on its face as an improper attempt to interfere with my constitutional right to free speech.
You can learn more about CURE on a website I created – www.whencurewontpay.com – discussing the shocking number of consumer complaints against CURE and serious issues about its claims-handling practices.
CURE’s decision to sue me over the blog I wrote about the insurance company has resulted in significant media attention over CURE’s claims handling practices and drawn even more attention to the blog itself.
If only CURE had been warned about the Streisand Effect.

Oh. I guess they were warned.
