Are U Turns Legal In Michigan?

In Michigan, U-turns are not always legal, and their validity depends on factors such as posted signs, location, and roadway safety. Though this driving maneuver is prohibited where signs specifically ban them, on one-way streets, and in certain areas of divided highways. However, they may be allowed when there is no prohibition, the maneuver can be completed safely, and it does not interfere with other traffic. For example, U-turns are often permitted at designated openings in a center divider or at intersections when the light is green and no restrictions are posted. Although this driving maneuver is permitted, they are still dangerous and should be avoided whenever possible.

What is a U turn?

A U turn is a 180-degree turn that is used to quickly reverse direction on a road that’s not divided by a median. I’m sure many of us have used this driving maneuver when in a rush or when we think no one is looking.

The Michigan State Police takes the position that a U turn is legal in Michigan so long as it can be done: (1) safely; (2) not carelessly or recklessly; (3) while yielding to other traffic with the right of way; and (4) without violating a local ordinance that prohibits them.

In Michigan, U-turns are not legal in several situations under the state’s traffic laws. Drivers cannot do this maneuver where signs specifically prohibit them, on one-way streets, or on divided highways unless there is a designated opening in the median. This driving maneuver is also unlawful on curves or near the crest of a hill where other drivers cannot see your vehicle from at least 500 feet away. Even in areas without restrictions, the maneuver is illegal if it interferes with the normal flow of traffic or creates a safety hazard.

In Michigan, U-turns are legal in many situations as long as they are done safely and not specifically prohibited. You can perform this driving maneuver at an intersection when the light is green, unless a sign says otherwise. On divided highways, it is allowed only at designated median openings. The state also permits this maneuver at intersections controlled by traffic signals, provided you yield to other traffic and pedestrians. However, it is never legal on one-way streets or where “No U-Turn” signs are posted. Ultimately, the key rule is that this maneuver must not interfere with other traffic or create unsafe conditions.

Cities, villages and/or townships can prohibit them if they have adopted Rule 434 of the Uniform Traffic Code, which provides the “driver of any vehicle shall not turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction on any street in a business district and shall not, on any other street, so turn a vehicle unless the movement can be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic.” (See R 28.1434(1))

Can you get a ticket for making one even though they are permitted?

Even though U turns are legal under Michigan law, you could get a ticket for: (1) disobeying a sign prohibiting U turns (MCL 257.611(1)); (2) speeding (MCL 257.627(1)); (3) reckless driving (MCL 257.626); (4) careless or negligent driving (MCL 257.626b); (5) impeding traffic (MCL 257.676b(1)); and/or (6) a turn not “made in safety” (MCL 257.648(1)).

Is this driving manuever dangerous?

This driving maneuver is more dangerous than many other types of driving maneuvers. It is easy – and common- for a driver to underestimate distance and speed of oncoming vehicles. Also, other drivers on the road are not expecting you do one.

As an auto accident lawyer, I have seen more than my share of these driving maneuvers gone wrong. My advice is to avoid using this driving maneuver whenever possible.

If you want to make a U-turn in Michigan, you’ll need to make sure it’s both safe and legal before doing so. Here are the main things to keep in mind:

  • Check for signs – If there’s a “No U-Turn” sign posted, you cannot make one.
  • Divided highways – U-turns are only allowed at designated openings in the median.
  • One-way streets – You cannot make a U-turn on a one-way street.
  • Traffic signals – If you’re at an intersection with a green light, you may generally make a U-turn unless it’s specifically prohibited.
  • Safety – You can’t make a U-turn if it interferes with other traffic or isn’t safe given road conditions.
