*Data includes any car accident (including fender benders, injury car accidents and fatal car accidents) that occurred within 250 feet of the intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to highways. “Intersection” is defined as any road with a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout.

No. 1 Dangerous Intersection: I 94 and Sprinkle Road, Comstock Township

A newcomer to the No. 1 spot on the top 10 list of the most dangerous intersections in Kalamazoo County for 2018 is a roundabout just south of I 94 on Sprinkle Road with 54 total crashes, a significant increase from the 33 car crashes in 2017.  While these roundabouts were installed back in 2015, intersections close to freeway exits typically see more car accidents.  Fortunately, all of these accidents had zero injuries – a testament to how safe roundabouts are compared to traditional intersections.

To see a map of all existing and proposed roundabouts in the state visit the Michigan Roundabout Resource Center.

No. 2 Dangerous Intersection: Drake Road and K L Ave, Kalamazoo

The No. 2 spot on the list for the most dangerous intersections in Kalamazoo County is held by a familiar corner that has been on these lists for many years with high crash volumes.  While a reduction in car crashes from 58 in 2017 to 48 in 2018 is a good sign, Drake Road continues to have a high volume of car accidents each year at multiple intersections.
