Our attorneys share the 10 most dangerous intersections in Detroit based on 2018 car accident data so local drivers can use extra caution when traveling through these areas.

This annual list of most dangerous intersections in Detroit is provided by our Detroit car accident lawyers to help keep Michigan drivers safe.

Intersections are dangerous. But these Detroit intersections are even more dangerous.

Over 30% of all fatal car accidents occurred at intersections, according to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts (“2017 Quick Facts”).

Our list of the most dangerous intersections in Detroit is the latest car accident data available from 2018 on the top 10 intersections with the highest number of reported car crashes. Our attorneys would like to sincerely thank the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit, which compiled the raw data from thousands of motor vehicle accident reports submitted by local police and law enforcement throughout Michigan.

*Data includes any car accident (including fender benders, injury car accidents and fatal car accidents) that occurred within 250 feet of the intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to highways. “Intersection” is defined as any road with a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout.

No. 1 Dangerous Intersection: Joy Road and M 39 (Southfield Freeway)

Moving up from the No. 2 spot on the list of the most dangerous intersections in Detroit this year is the busy interchange on the west side of the city.  This intersection had a significant increase in car accidents from 72 in 2017 to 99 in 2018.  Use caution in this area as the number of injuries remains high with 26 in the past year.

No. 2 Dangerous Intersection: 8 Mile Road and Woodward Ave

Moving up from No. 3 last year to No. 2 on this year’s list of the most dangerous intersections in Detroit is another busy area along the border of Detroit and Ferndale.  As is the case with the above corner, this one also had a large spike in car accidents going from 67 in 2017 to 87 in 2018.  As Woodward Avenue becomes an alternative during rush hour traffic to avoid backups on I 75, use caution.

High Injuries Alert:

One additional intersection to note on this list is the area of 8 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue which has the highest level of injuries of any intersection in the entire state of Michigan.  With 37 injuries in 2018 compared to 19 in 2017, this is a huge concern for drivers who need to use extreme caution driving through this area bordering Eastpointe.

Dangerous Intersection Data for other Michigan cities and counties

As we see from years of data analysis on Michigan car accidents, intersections with heavy traffic near freeways or retail businesses continually show up on these high crash lists.
