*Data includes any car accident (including fender benders, injury crashes and fatal car crashes) that occurred within 250 feet of the intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to highways. “Intersection” is defined as any road with a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout.
No. 1 Dangerous intersection: 18 ½ Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, Sterling Heights
While this busy roundabout took over the top spot on the top 10 list of Macomb County’s most dangerous intersections this year for car crashes, it saw a reduction in car accidents compared to 2017, going from 165 in 2017 to 141 in 2018. Injury totals remain low at just 12 in 2018 as roundabouts continue to provide a safer alternative to traditional intersections.
To see a map of all existing and proposed roundabouts in the state visit the Michigan Roundabout Resource Center.
No. 2 Dangerous intersection: 11 Mile Road/I 696 and Van Dyke Avenue, Warren/Center Line
No other county in metro Detroit had a more significant shift in traffic volumes than Macomb County when MDOT closed I 696 for more than half of 2018. These types of major closures have a domino effect on local street traffic volume and thus car crashes. In addition, intersections along I 696 may see lower crash volumes due to drivers avoiding the area as was likely the case with last year’s top intersection in Michigan for car accidents seeing a huge reduction in 2018. While the decrease was significant going from 194 car crashes in 2017 to 126 in 2018, it still kept this intersection near the top of the list of Macomb County’s most dangerous intersections.
As in past years, Hall Road (M 59) continues to show up in these top crash lists with four of the top ten in 2018 occurring along this busy east/west corridor. Van Dyke Avenue also shows up as frequently in the list – use caution traveling along both of these busy roads.
