No. 1 Dangerous Intersection: U.S. 131 and Wealthy Road Interchange, Grand Rapids
Local drivers will not be surprised to see this interchange taking the top spot once again on the list of the top 10 Kent County and Grand Rapids most dangerous intersections in 2018 with 85 crashes compared to 91 in 2017. Of concern too is the rise in injuries, going from 13 in 2017 to 24 in 2018. These figures include reported car crashes both where Wealthy Street goes over the highway and the entrance and exit ramps off U.S. 131. With the closure of I 196 over the Grand River, expect 2019 traffic volume to increase and thus the risk of car accidents and injuries in the area.
No. 2 Dangerous Intersection: 28th Street and I 96 Interchange, Cascade Township
Retaining the No. 2 spot on the list of the top 10 Kent County and Grand Rapids most dangerous intersections again in 2018 is another busy interchange at 28th Street. As has been the case in past years, six of the top ten intersections for car crashes in Kent County are along this busy east/west corridor. With 75 car accidents in 2018 there was a slight improvement from the 77 car accidents in 2017.
Impact of Kent County Construction
With the closure of I 196 in downtown and construction along I 96 during the 2019 season in Kent County, motorists will be using more local roads to navigate the detours. This will create higher traffic volumes and thus likely more car crashes. Always use caution driving in these areas and stay alert.
