Michigan’s 2017 Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections for a Car Crash

Our attorneys share the annual list of Michigan’s most dangerous intersections based on car crash statistics for 2017

The intersection of 11 Mile Road/I 696 @ Van Dyke Ave on the border of Center Line and Warren in Macomb County ranked No. 1 among the most dangerous intersections in Michigan for car crashes in 2017.

What are the Top 20 most dangerous intersections in Michigan, based on Michigan State Police car crash data for 2017?

This is what Michigan drivers want to know. Armed with this information, drivers can choose to avoid these dangerous intersections and take alternative routes, or at least use extra-caution when driving in these areas.

An intersection is a dangerous place to be: Michigan Traffic Crash Facts reports that in 2016 over 30% of all fatal car crashes occurred at intersections.

Our goal is to help make driving safer. Each year, our attorneys assemble a list of the most dangerous intersections in Michigan based on the number of car crashes that have occurred at those interchanges.

Our attorneys would also like to thank the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit for providing the car crash data which we then use to identify what intersections had the highest number of reported car crashes. The MSP-TCRU’s data is a compilation of the traffic crash data from motor vehicle accident reports filed by local law enforcement throughout Michigan.

Source: Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit(Note: “Intersection” is defined as any road with a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout. The numbers include any reported car accident that occurred within 250 of an intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to highways.)

Please keep in mind that this list includes the total number of car crashes, so this list includes everything from minor fender benders to more serious injuries and fatalities. A second post that highlights the intersections that had the most injuries and fatalities will follow.

No. 1 Dangerous Intersection: Van Dyke Avenue and 11 Mile Road/I-696, Warren/Center Line

Moving up a spot from last year, the new No. 1 intersection in the state for total car crashes goes to a very busy interchange where a heavily traveled stretch of Van Dyke runs over I 696. With freeway on/off ramps and merging traffic, this area experienced an increase in accidents from 158 in 2016 to 194 this past year — a 23% increase that sets this intersection far ahead of any other in Michigan. These numbers include reported car crashes that occurred at the east and westbound traffic lights at 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke as well as directly over the freeway along Van Dyke. The interchange also tied for the No. 4 spot for most injuries in the state with 32 last year – a slight decrease from the 37 injuries that were reported in 2016.

No. 2 Dangerous Intersection: 18 ½ Mile Road and M 53/Van Dyke Road, Sterling Heights

A surprising change was the increase in this roundabout from 92 crashes in 2016 to 165 crashes last year – an 80% spike in just one year.  Injury crashes also went up from just 4 in 2016 to 13 crashes that were reported last year.  What makes this increase even more surprising is this roundabout was installed in 2005 so local drivers have been navigating this area for years.  Other than an increase in traffic, it is difficult to pinpoint what else has changed in this area to contribute to such a big jump in crashes.  To learn about how fault is determined in a roundabout crash and see a map of these types of intersections throughout the state visit our Roundabout Resource Center.

No. 3 Dangerous Intersection: Telegraph and 12 Mile Roads, Southfield

Holding steady at the No. 3 spot on the list is a busy intersection in Southfield where local businesses attract daily commuters and shoppers. When adding up all crashes in the area, including those on the turnarounds north and south of the intersection, there was a slight increase from 145 crashes in 2016 to 150 crashes this past year. Telegraph has always been a well-known, high-speed/high-traffic road in metro Detroit, and the Telegraph/12 Mile intersection is even more so, given its proximity to Northwestern Highway and I-696.

No. 4 Dangerous Intersection: Orchard Lake and 14 Mile Roads – Farmington Hills/West Bloomfield

Last year’s top car crash intersection fell to number 4 this year as this very busy area saw 144 crashes compared to 163 in 2016.   Injury crashes improved only slightly with 24 reported crashes last year compared to 27 in 2016.  One factor in 2017 that likely contributed to these crashes was an increase in traffic volume as Orchard Lake Road north of the roundabout was under construction and many drivers detoured through 14 Mile Road to avoid the congestion.  As local drivers become more comfortable with this roundabout, we hope to see the numbers continue to decline.

No. 5 Dangerous Intersection: Pontiac Trail and M-5/Martin Parkway, Commerce Township

Holding at a steady pace is the largest roundabout in the state with 142 crashes in 2017 compared to 144 in 2016.  There was a slight increase in overall injury crashes with 9 last year compared to 6 in 2016. As a major artery that connects the growing northern suburbs with area freeways, heavy vehicle volumes will not be subsiding anytime soon as recent news of an upcoming retail and entertainment complex on the northeast corner of this roundabout will generate additional traffic concerns.

Noteworthy Changes for Ford @ Lilley Roads, Canton

One of the most surprising increases in crashes occurred at the intersection of Ford and Lilley Roads in Canton Township.  While accidents involving injuries decreased slightly, overall total crashes jumped from 85 in 2016 to 109 in 2017. As a worker in the Ford Road area told Hometownlife.com’s Ed Wright: “There’s probably an accident at that intersection two or three times a week … We usually don’t hear the actual crash, but we hear the sirens coming. There was an accident a couple weeks ago at the intersection that closed half of Ford Road to the east of Lilley.” When reviewing crash changes along Ford Road intersections between I 275 and Sheldon Road, almost every corner saw an increase in crashes in 2017 compared to the prior year.
