Let’s take a quick look at the top 3 locations that had the highest number of motor vehicle accidents to learn more:
No. 1 among Washtenaw County’s most dangerous intersections: State Street @ Ellsworth Road, Ann Arbor/Pittsfield Township, 120 car crashes, 5 injuries
While this roundabout intersection has held the top spot for three years now, total crash numbers are still much lower than the 171 crashes in 2014. We are confident that a joint initiative this year with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, the Ann Arbor Police Department and the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety, to monitor and educate drivers in roundabouts, will result in even lower overall crash rates. In addition, with only five of the 120 total crashes resulting in an injury, roundabouts still remain a much safer alternative to traffic signal intersections.

No. 2 among Washtenaw County’s most dangerous intersections: Hogback/Carpenter Road @ Washtenaw Avenue, Pittsfield Township, 65 car crashes, 11 injuries
This busy area, which is close to a major freeway interchange, retains the No. 2 spot from our last dangerous intersections report. Stay alert in areas like this, where merging traffic and a heavy retail presence contribute to congestion and crashes.
No. 3 among Washtenaw County’s most dangerous intersections: Michigan Avenue @ U.S. 23 ramp, Pittsfield Township, 52 car crashes, 7 injuries
With the top three spots remaining unchanged between 2015 and 2016, this busy interchange did see a slight reduction in crashes, going from 54 to 52 crashes respectively. What’s more concerning, though, is how the No. 4 intersection on the 2016 list — at Carpenter Road and Michigan Avenue — is just east of this interchange and had 51 crashes last year. That brings the total crashes at these neighboring intersections to a whopping 103 accidents in 2016.
