Michigan lawmakers investigate increasing speed limits

Lawyer Steven Gursten tells The Detroit Free Press that it’s a deadly idea

Attorney Steven Gursten was recently featured in a Detroit Free Press story on the effects of legislation that would increase Michigan speed limits to up to 80 miles per hour.

Gursten told reporter Kathleen Gray that upcoming proposals by a group of senators led by Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge), are a dangerous idea – especially given the increase in texting while driving.

Said Gursten:

“We are increasing speed limits at the exact same time that there is more distraction in our car than ever. When you increase speed, two things happen: Your safety cushion of being able to react quickly disappears, and the collision that ensues is going to be more severe.”
