All about the Defense Medical Exam (DME)

April 19, 2013 by Steven M. Gursten

Today Michigan Auto Law will be presenting during the Michigan Association for Justice “2013 DME Seminar” in Dearborn

What is a Defense Medical Exam (DME)? When people are injured in car and truck accidents, defense attorneys for auto insurance companies will send them for a “second opinion” medical exam.

Insurance companies often call these second opinion visits IME’s, short for “independent” medical exams.

But these DME doctors are certainly not independent. The doctors that accident victims see at DMEs are selected personally by a defense attorney and the insurance companies, and they are paid a lot of money to find “nothing wrong” with seriously injured people.

Doctors performing these 10- to 15-minute, one-time exams at the behest of insurance companies do some outrageous and dishonest things that cause innocent accident victims to have their No Fault benefits delayed, denied or cut off for no reason.

These DMEs are more concerned with insurance company profits than an accident victim’s health and recovery.
