Steve Gursten on MCCA subject to FOIA development
Michigan Lawyers Weekly interviews Gursten as a No-Fault insurance lawyer expert on the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association
Michigan Lawyers Weekly interviewed Steve Gursten after the court ruling that forces the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) to comply with the Freedom of Information Act and disclose its workings to the public.
The MCCA is a private, nonprofit association made up of a five-person board from the auto insurance companies, who manage the fund that compensates auto insurance companies when a No-Fault claim exceeds $500,000.
Gursten told Michigan Lawyers Weekly that the public has a right to know how the MCCA comes up with its fees and how much money is really in the fund, as they are required by law to pay into the fund:
“… there should not be a total information blackout. It’s not the CIA. … We have every right to at least have public disclosure of their finances to see where the money’s going.”
