What is the effect of social media use by car accident victims?

October 12, 2010 by Steven M. Gursten

Personal injury attorney’s article included in the American Association for Justice newsletter

I’d like to thank my friend, attorney Steve Gordon, for including my findings on how car accident victims using Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogs – and many other social media sites – can ruin their car accident cases.

Steve cited my blog in his article, “Social Networking Sites: A Usage Practical Guide to Discovery & Admissibility, which was featured in the American Association for Justice Spring 2010 newsletter. My blog, Attorney advice to car accident victims: Control your Facebook, Twitter, blogging, highlighted the perils of surveillance regarding social media and car accident victims in Michigan. It reviewed how defense attorneys and auto insurance adjusters looking for ways to avoid responsibility for the harms they have caused, can take old photos or status updates of clients engaging in activities that they’re now unable to do because of their auto accidents, and turn them around.

Steve Gordon reiterated this point for thousands of personal injury attorneys across the country who are members of the Association for Justice. Thanks, Steve. This article is unquestionably a great resource for injury attorneys looking to protect their clients, especially with the advantageous popularity and reliance on social media sites.

Steven M. Gursten is recognized as one of the nation’s top personal injury attorneys in serious car and truck accident injury cases and No-fault litigation. Michigan Auto Law has received the largest reported jury verdict for an automobile accident case in Michigan in six of the past nine years, including 2009, according to published reports.
