Michigan Truck Accident Statistics

The numbers of commercial truck accidents causing injury and death in Michigan far surpass the national averages. In fact, Michigan is one of the few states leading the country in its number of truck accidents. Annually, Michigan averages more than 100 fatal truck accidents and 5,000 truck accidents causing personal injury.

Here are some 2007 Michigan truck accident statistics:

  • There were 123 fatalities involving large truck accidents.
  • There were 108 fatal crashes involving commercial truck accidents.
  • There were 1,196 injuries in crashes involving semi-trucks.
  • There were 886 large trucks involved in injury crashes.
  • There were 3,617 trucks involved in tow away crashes.

Many of these truck accidents are caused by trucks with safety violations. As of October 2008, there were 1,087 commercial trucking companies in Michigan with less-than- satisfactory safety ratings, according to a census report from the Federal Motor Carrier Administration that was requested through the Freedom of Information Act by Michigan Auto Law. The data is proof that those companies’ records indicated the commercial motor carriers were out of compliance with one or more safety requirements or showed “substantial noncompliance with safety requirements.”
