Protect Yourself With Automobile Insurance

Due to the struggling economy, there is a good chance that when a serious car accident or truck accident occurs in Michigan, one of the drivers will be uninsured. But there is insurance coverage you can purchase to protect yourself. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage provides a valuable source of legal recovery after an accident, when someone is injured by another driver who is uninsured or does not have adequate insurance. Many insurance companies do not inform their policy holders of these important options.

State Farm now offers underinsured motorist coverage up to $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident. This means that in the event of a car accident, State Farm will pay up to $250,000 in insurance coverage per person. State Farm will pay up to the per accident maximum of $500,000 only if multiple people are injured. Keep in mind, no individual can get more than $250,000.

Our insurance lawyers recommend you tell your insurance agent you want a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in both uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Citizens, Farmers and other insurance companies offer these policies. For more information, please read our UM and UIM FAQs. Accident Prevention Tips

Wear a seat belt — A person not wearing a seatbelt is 8.4 times more likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness in a car crash.

Don’t drink and drive — 50 percent of car accident fatalities involve alcohol and 37 percent of fatally injured drivers were intoxicated at the time of their crash.

Properly secure your child — Place infants less than 1 year old in rear-facing seats, and place children in the back seat away from airbags.
