Steven M. Gursten, insurance lawyer and head of Michigan Auto Law, was interviewed by MLive Detroit on Sen. Virgil Smith’s proposed bill (SB 514), which would allow private auto insurance companies to offer stripped-down policies to low-income people throughout Michigan.
Gursten told the newspaper that SB 514 is a bad idea for seriously injured car accident victims that could exhaust their personal injury protection (PIP) insurance coverage with a single hospital stay:
“For me, we have this incredibly vital protection for people, and now we’re talking about dismembering it, really hurting thousands and thousands of people every year,” Gursten said. “We all want to lower the cost of auto insurance, but this is the wrong way to do it.”
