Attorney Brandon Hewitt talks to WXYZ about Detroit’s high crash intersections

Brandon Hewitt breaks down some of the reasons for the amount of car crashes in the city for 2016

With the recent release of Michigan Auto Law’s annual list of Detroit’s high crash intersections, Michigan Auto Law attorney and COO Brandon Hewitt appeared on WXYZ-Channel 7 to offer reasons for the amount of city car accidents in 2016.

Besides speed, traffic and the designs of the roads, Hewitt told report Kim Russell that traffic light mistiming could be a major factor in these crashes.

“[Y]ou might have people trying to turn right on a red light. So maybe there’s a consideration to put a no-turn-on-red [sign] there.”

Michigan Auto Law’s list of intersections— collected from Michigan State Police data — includes any reported motor vehicle accident that occurred within 250 of any intersection, such as turnarounds and on/off ramps to freeways.

Freeways figured into five of the top 10 for the list, with the I-94/I-75 interchange taking the top spot.

Hewitt’s advice to drivers in these intersections is simple:

“Be extra cautious. … We forget that car crashes are the No. 1 cause of death in the country.”
