Michigan Motorcycle Insurance Protection for Catastrophic Injury

Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association - Motorcycle Accidents

Our motorcycle accident lawyers frequently tell clients that statistically, motorcycle accident injuries are far worse than those sustained by people involved in car accidents and truck accidents. In the event of extraordinary injury, a motorcycle rider requiring medical coverage can also receive protection from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association.

The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) was created by the Michigan Legislature and provides unlimited lifetime coverage for medical expenses for catastrophic injuries resulting from auto accidents. According to the association, catastrophic claims involve injury to the brain, and/or spinal cord, which results in serious and permanent disability, such as paralysis, coma or traumatic brain injury.

The MCCA reimburses auto no-fault insurance companies for each personal injury protection (PIP) medical claim paid in excess of a set amount. Currently, that amount is $460,000. In other words, the insurance company of the catastrophically injured motorcyclist pays the entire claim, but is reimbursed by the MCCA for covered expenses exceeding $460,000.

All Michigan automobile insurance companies are assessed to cover the catastrophic medical claims occurring in Michigan. Those assessments are generally passed on to auto insurance policyholders, including motorcyclists, to maintain the fund. Although motorcyclists comprise less than 2 percent of MCCA funds, they account for 7.2 percent of all MCCA claims that are paid.
