Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who can apply?

A. High school students who are juniors and seniors during the spring of the contest’s year. Applicant must be a Michigan resident with a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Q. I’m not sure what to submit for a graphic, Tweet or video. Any suggestions?

A. Engaging and impactful submissions that compel teens to avoid and prevent distracted driving are encouraged. Remember, young drivers are your audience. Consider what types of messages and videos would influence you in your own driving habits. Use your creativity and make sure you submit your own original work. For some examples, click here.

Q. What is the prize?

A. Each individual winner will receive an award to apply toward tuition for any university, college or technical school in the U.S. Funds will be sent directly to the school within one year of the scholarship deadline. The breakdown of awards is as follows:

  • Best Tweet Submission: $500
  • Best Graphic Submission: $1,000
  • Best Video Submission: $1,500
  • Overall Best Submission: $2,000

Limit one type of submission per student.

Q. What if I don’t end up going to a secondary school?

A. The scholarship is to be used exclusively for expenses associated with higher learning. Funds will be sent directly to the school within one year of the scholarship deadline. If a winner does not enroll in a higher learning school within one year of the scholarship deadline, the scholarship money will be forfeited and applied to the next year’s group of winners.

Q. What are the different types of submissions allowed?

A. YouTube videos, Tweets and graphics are all allowed. Videos should be submitted by copying the YouTube URL and pasting directly into the submission form where indicated. Tweets must be 110 characters or less and should be typed into the designated space in the submission form. A graphic must be in PNG file format only and should be uploaded in the designated space in the submission form. Videos and graphics must not contain any copyrighted materials – this includes music or logos.

Q. Will I receive a notice that my submission was received?

A. Yes, once you have completed the submission form with all required fields and clicked on the SUBMIT button, you will receive an automatic reply via e-mail indicating we have received your materials.

Q. How will I know if I’ve been chosen as a finalist for the scholarship?

A. Finalists will be notified by a representative of Michigan Auto Law via e-mail or phone call on or before April 10th. Finalists will be required to provide additional documents showing proof of your attendance from the high school you submitted on your submission form.

Q. When is the deadline to submit my entry?

A. The deadline to submit your entry is 11:59p.m. EST on March 31st.

Q. When will the winners be announced?

A. Winners will be announced in April to coincide with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.. Each of the four winners will be notified prior to the announcement.

Q. What will be expected of me if I am selected as a winner?

A. Winners will be expected to participate both in person (if feasible) and online for interviews with representatives from the sponsoring law firm to promote the scholarship program and discuss your submission message. Each winner’s high school will be contacted to request an interview as well. Photos and videos of winners will be shared online through Michigan Auto Law’s blog and social media as well.
