Concussion

A concussion is the most common type of personal injury to the brain following a car or truck accident.  Because they are more common, this does not mean that they are less serious.  Although most cases do get better, a significant number - 1 in 10  -  can have permanent cognitive deficits or emotional injury.

When the closed head injury involves a concussion, there is a disruption, usually temporary, of neurological function resulting from a blow or violent shaking. The deficit should clear within an hour of the closed head injury and may be accompanied by a period of amnesia or disorientation. The physical examination will be normal as well as any laboratory or radiological studies. The effects of a concussion may be long lasting and very serious

Nursing care for the patient with this type of closed head injury will include: taking an accurate history, performing a complete physical assessment and serial neurological evaluations, monitoring of vital signs, and explaining the Head Injury Discharge Instructions to the responsible party.
