Protect Yourself From Uninsured Motorists

Detroit attorneys review how Detroit drivers can protect themselves from uninsured motorists

Advice on Uninsured Motorist Coverage for Detroit Drivers

According to a recent study from the Insurance Research Council (IRC), Michigan is ranked ninth in the U.S. for uninsured motorists, meaning that there are an estimated 17 percent of drivers without any type of insurance coverage.

The Detroit attorneys of Michigan Auto Law recommend that you protect yourself and your family by getting uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. The cost is minimal, and it can truly save your life.

Review your current auto policy to see if you have uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage will cover you if you are injured in an accident by an uninsured driver.

  • If you are seriously injured in a car accident and the at-fault driver has no insurance, their personal assets (which many times are not adequate) are your only option to collect benefits if you do not have uninsured motorist coverage.
  • If you are seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver, UM coverage can provide benefits to you.

Review your current auto policy to see if you have underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage protects people who have been seriously injured in a car accident by a driver with inadequate insurance policy limits.

  • If you are seriously injured in a car accident and the at-fault driver only has a $25,000 policy limit – that is all you can collect if you do not have underinsured motorist coverage.
  • UIM coverage will protect you if the value of your case is worth more than what the other driver’s auto insurance covers.

Insurance Companies to Avoid

  • State Farm Insurance Company and some other insurance companies refuse to offer underinsured motorist coverage.  If your policy does not list uninsured/underinsured coverage and your current carrier refuses to provide it, please consider changing carriers to better protect yourself.

There is evidence that the current economic downturn resulted in thousands of drivers dropping their insurance in 2008 as the unemployment rate climbed.   With approximately one in six drivers across the United States that may be driving without any insurance by 2010, Detroit drivers have options to protect themselves in a car accident.
