With a large population and heavy commuter traffic on weekdays (and increasingly on weekends), Detroit also sees a corresponding high number of car accidents. And with so much talk about the auto No-Fault insurance crisis resulting in sky-high rates for residents, and now that half of the city is driving without auto insurance at all, anything that can help to minimize local drivers’ risk is important.

Our Michigan Auto Law attorneys want Metro Detroit area drivers to be aware of what streets and intersections had the highest numbers of reported car accidents in 2016.

Please take caution in the following areas:

Rank Intersection Total Crashes Injury Crashes Only
1 I-94/I-75 Interchange 84 21
2 Joy Road @ M-39/Southfield Freeway 80 24
3 I-94 @ Moross Road 75 34
4 M-39/Southfield Freeway @ Warren Avenue 62 21
5 7 Mile Road @ Van Dyke Avenue 41 13
6 Jefferson Avenue @ Randolph Street 40 2
7 Linwood Street @ Davison Street 39 14
8 Warren Avenue @ I-75 38 11
9 Conner Street @ Gratiot Avenue 37 22
10 I-96 @ Schaefer Highway 37 15

* Intersections include any reported motor vehicle accident that occurred within 250 of any intersection, including turnarounds and on/off ramps to freeways.

Keep in mind, total crashes include any reported motor vehicle accident.  Everything from fatalities to minor fender benders.

Let’s take a quick look at the top 3 on the list to learn more:

No. 1 Detroit car crash intersection: I-94 and I-75 Interchange, 84 car crashes, 21 injuries

When including all crashes that occurred within the on/off ramps, this interchange had 84 accidents last year. Not only is this an area where two major freeways intersect, but with Wayne State University and the Hamtramck plant in the vicinity, a large amount of traffic is likely to blame.

As our lawyers review high-crash intersections for the entire state, we always see interchanges show up on these lists, with commercial trucks, varying speeds on freeway ramps and merging traffic resulting in more accidents. Our best advice is to slow down and know exactly what lane you need to be in ahead of time to avoid last-minute merging into traffic.

No. 2 Detroit car crash intersection: Joy Road and M-39/Southfield Freeway, 80 car crashes, 24 injuries

When including all crashes that occurred on Joy Road above the freeway, as well as the on/off ramps to M-39, the interchange had 80 crashes last year. We’re not sure exactly why the numbers are so high here, other than some construction along Joy in 2016 that may have made navigating the area harder.

No. 3 Detroit car crash intersection: I-94 and Moross Road, 75 car crashes, 34 injuries

The No. 3 spot this year goes to an area with freeway on/off ramps and merging traffic. These numbers include reported car crashes that occurred in the turnarounds above I-94 just east and west of Moross. The interchange also took the No. 5 spot for most injuries in the state and had far more injuries than any other interchange or intersection in Detroit. Use caution in this area where high speeds are likely causing many injuries.
