11 Mile Road West and Southfield Road & 12 Mile Road West and Telegraph Road make the list with the highest number of car accidents in 2009
My series of the worst intersections in Southeast Michigan continues today with dangerous car accident traps in Southfield, Michigan. Southfield is home to a bustling business district, with the Traveler’s Tower, the Southfield Town Center, and several other high-rise commercial office buildings. Combine all of the commuters speeding around with lots of strip mall shopping and subdivisions and you get traffic – lots of it.
I would know. Southfield was home to our Michigan Auto Law attorneys for more than 35 years – and I’ve handled quite a few car accidents there, as well as walked across the street from Travelers Tower to the 46th District Court for first-party No-Fault cases that I routinely file for my clients.
As I’ve said before, car accidents are preventable. We can all lower our odds of being injured in one by avoiding dangerous intersections entirely or using extra caution when traveling through them. Here are the top high-crash intersections in Southfield for 2009, according to SEMCOG’s (South East Michigan Council of Governments) list of the top 10 worst intersections in Southeast Michigan.

Numbers of car accidents can fluctuate considerably each year, so taking long-term crash statistics into account helps paint a bigger picture of what areas to avoid, or at least use extra caution in. For instance, the corner of 11 Mile Road and Southfield Road has been one of the worst Southeast Michigan intersections during each of the past five years, with 455 total crashes. While this corner ranked No. 5 in the 2009 list, the total crash number for the last five years has far surpassed all other intersections. Drivers in the Southfield area should once again, be careful here.
Twelve Mile Road West and Telegraph Road is very close to I-696 and Northwestern Highway. People merging onto the freeways can be very problematic. Additionally, people pulling out of the Tel-Twelve Mall and businesses and restaurants in the area on Telegraph as well as those test-driving vehicles from multiple car dealerships there, make congestion worse and increase the odds of being involved in a car accident. Extra care should be used in this area, especially around rush hour.
To help avoid car accidents in Southfield, take a look at these safe driving tips that I like to share with my clients and friends. It’s also a good idea to print this handy auto accident checklist and keep it in your glove box, so you are prepared in case of a car crash.
Again, I’d like to remind you that your text or phone call can wait. Please keep an eye on the busy roads to protect yourself and other families who are out and about.
