Number of Dangerous Truck Crashes Continues to Climb in Michigan, U.S.

Our truck accident lawyers would like you to have the latest truck accident statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The 2007 crash statistics are unsettling, as they show a startling number of accidents occurring, and continuing to increase in Michigan and throughout the country.

National Truck Accident Statistics

o There were 4,584 trucks involved in fatal accidents.
o There were 4,808 fatalities in crashes involving semi-trucks.
o There were 139,587 commercial trucks involved in non-fatal accidents.
o There were 56,487 semi-trucks involved in injury collisions.
o There were 83,908 injuries in crashes involving commercial trucks.
o There were 83,100 trucks involved in tow away accidents.
o There were 2,248 large trucks involved in Hazmat placard crashes.

Sadly, most of these crashes could have been prevented. Our truck accident lawyers know that approximately one in three trucks are so mechanically unsafe that they are operating illegally on our highways. This means that such trucks would immediately be placed in out-of-service condition because they are deemed so dangerous by police, that they cannot even be driven to a maintenance facility to be fixed. Instead, these unsafe trucks must be towed.

Unsafe trucks cause far too many accidents, but there are also too many dangerous truck drivers. Our accident lawyers know that negligent truck drivers contribute to many of the more than 110,000 people who suffer serious personal injury every year in crashes involving tractor trailers. That equals more than 2,000 personal injuries and wrongful deaths every week and about 5,000 lives lost every year in truck accidents.

Michigan Truck Accident Statistics

o There were 123 fatalities involving large truck accidents.
o There were 108 fatal crashes involving commercial truck accidents.
o There were 1,196 injuries in crashes involving semi-trucks.
o There were 886 large trucks involved in injury crashes.
o There were 3,617 trucks involved in tow away crashes.

There is an enormous problem in Michigan today with bad truckers driving out-of-service or poorly maintained trucks on Michigan roads. At this moment, there are 1,087 commercial trucking companies in Michigan with less-than- satisfactory safety ratings, according to a census report from the Federal Motor Carrier Administration that was requested through the Freedom of Information Act by Michigan Auto Law. These are Michigan trucks whose companies’ records show that the commercial motor carriers were out of compliance with one or more safety requirements or showed “substantial noncompliance with safety requirements.”

The astonishing number of unsafe trucking companies in Michigan clearly calls for better enforcement and prosecution against trucking companies that knowingly endanger the public by putting unfit drivers and unsafe trucks on the road. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems the only ones who are sounding this warning call are lawyers who handle serious truck accidents. Most of the public is completely unaware, and law enforcement does not have the funding to pursue this threat more aggressively.
