Attorney Steve Gursten on national truck accident crisis involving crossover mirrors

September 4, 2013 by Steven M. Gursten

Gursten weighs in on how these mirrors could prevent trucks running over pedestrians in the transport journal Streetsblog.org

Attorney Steven Gursten, head of Michigan Auto Law, discussed crossover mirrors in commercial trucks – and how these $100 safety mirrors can save lives – with Streetsblog.org reporter Stephen Miller.

Streetsblog.org is a New York transportation blog. In New York and other cities throughout the country, blind spots in the front of truck cabs have contributed to a high number of pedestrian deaths.

Because of the massive size of an 80,000 pound truck, there is a very large blind spot directly in front of the cab. Crossover mirrors are a simple, $100 addition to eliminate that blind spot. They’re designed so that any person who is at least three feet tall and at least one foot away from the front of the cab can be seen by the truck driver in the mirror.

Crossover mirrors are required by law in New York, but Gursten told Streetsblog.org that they are not required in Michigan and a number of other states in the U.S. Gursten says a federal law requiring crossover mirrors on all trucks in all states would save lives and prevent truck crashes:

”It really is that easy. They’re under a couple hundred dollars, and they save lives.”
