Why proposed amendment to MRPC 1.5 hurts public, quality of lawyer representation in personal injury & other legal matters

Michigan Lawyers Weekly interviews Michigan Auto Law attorney on proposed new rule on lawyer referral fees in accident and injury cases

I was interviewed last week by  Michigan Lawyers Weekly on MRPC 1.5, a proposed Michigan Supreme Court amendment to rules governing referral fees between lawyers. Michigan Lawyers Weekly asked me for comment because my law firm does no public advertising - ie., no television, no radio, no billboards, no Yellow Pages, etc. But we have become the largest law firm in Michigan helping people injured in serious car accidents and truck accidents.

For personal injury lawyers: Niche specialization in auto accident cases

May 2nd, 2011

Steve Gursten of Michigan Auto Law is speaking to the Chicago Bar Association on helping injury attorneys increase car accident settlements through specialization

This week, I’ll be speaking in Chicago to a group of injury lawyers for the Chicago Bar Association. My topic is helping injury lawyers get better results for their clients — by devoting their practices to only one area of law and becoming the best lawyers they can be.

This conference is so important because insurance companies are now (more than ever), working hard to minimize auto accident settlements through various dishonest tactics, such as claims software like Colossus. Personal injury lawyers throughout the country are fighting for every dollar for our injured clients.

What happens when Michigan residents get injured in another state?

Personal injury attorney explains how laws work, and what happens when Michigan injury victims are hurt out of state

Today’s guest blog is from my friend Tim Titolo, an excellent Las Vegas personal injury attorney. Tim and I have both spoken at seminars on traumatic brain injury and truck accidents. More importantly for this blog, we have worked together in the past - when Michigan residents were unfortunately injured visiting Las Vegas. I asked Tim to talk about what happens when people from Michigan and other states get injured out of state (I will be addressing the second part of this: how Michigan’s No-Fault insurance benefits apply to Michigan residents who are injured in car accidents out of state on Tim’s blog shortly). Here’s what Tim says:

Auto accident victim denied No-Fault benefits by insurance adjuster– despite TBI and spinal cord injuries

No-Fault attorney shares another unfortunate story at the hands of greedy Michigan insurance companies

Following suit from yesterday’s blog about an insurance adjuster unfairly cutting off benefits from an innocent and very injured car accident victim, I’d like to share another story that shows just how unethical and callous the insurance industry in Michigan can be.

This is a blog comment from one of our readers, Noram:

When to consult an insurance attorney? Any claim involving Michigan attendant care benefits – Part 5

March 2nd, 2011

Insurance attorney explains how your auto insurance company doesn’t always give the full rate or the fair rate for attendant care and other No-Fault benefits

Yesterday, I wrote about some of the deliberate fraud I see insurance company claims adjusters commit.  But no type of case has more insurance fraud than cases involving attendant care claims.

Why I love being a Michigan personal injury lawyer

February 14th, 2011

Valentine’s Day love extends to the practice of law, helping real people too

Valentine’s Day is a time to show appreciation to those close to you. But such appreciation can also apply to your career. As a Michigan personal injury lawyer, I’ve had the opportunity to really help victims of car accidents and truck accidents with very serious injuries. To me, there is tremendous honor in this.

Tort-“reform” v. protecting true conservative principles

February 3rd, 2011

Personal injury lawyer discusses why Michigan trial lawyers represent true Republican values, based on a Fred Thompson op-ed

There is an element of the Republican Party in Michigan that has lost its voice.  Instead, that voice seems to have been increasingly drowned out by the auto insurance companies. And lately, even the Chamber of Commerce has reflexively taken up the call for even more “tort-reform” in Michigan.

A World without Lawyers

Michigan personal injury lawyer reminds us how accident attorneys have made our society more safe and more free

It’s fashionable to bash personal injury lawyers these days, in large part due to the millions of dollars being spent by the insurance industry and auto insurance companies.  Here’s a great video I found that reminds us all of the good that trial lawyers do in protecting society -  from exploding Pintos to civil rights to out-of-service trucks barreling down our roads.

People forget that plaintiff lawyers represent people, and as this video shows, we’ve had a profound impact protecting our society and making it more safe and more free.

Real people, real stories: Testimonial about a “life-altering car accident” in Michigan

November 3rd, 2010

I’d like to share a testimonial from one of my clients, Cheryl Verdun. Cheryl and her husband Bob live in Taylor, Michigan. Cheryl was rear-ended in a car accident, and injured badly.

In her video, Cheryl discusses her experiences after her crash, dealing with her personal injuries and how her attorneys here were able to support and protect her.  She also discusses her car accident settlement, which was able to provide for her after her injuries.

Here’s what Cheryl says:

Reason 1 to defeat Justice Robert Young, Jr. for re-election to Michigan Supreme Court: Big bias toward personal injury victims

October 7th, 2010

Personal injury lawyer stresses that Young consistently voted against accident victims and puts special interest before the safety of Michigan families

Justice Robert P. Young, Jr., who is running in November for reelection to another 8-year term on the Michigan Supreme Court, votes against personal injury victims more than three times as much as he votes for them, according to research conducted by our personal injury lawyers.

During his 11 years on the Michigan Supreme Court, Young, a Republican who was appointed to the court by former Republican Governor John M. Engler, participated in 237 published opinions involving personal injury lawsuits.
