Is the repeal efforts of state motorcycle helmet laws one of the worst ideas ever?

It’s hard to think of a worse idea. If the motorcycle helmet law is repealed, more people will die, and more people will be catastrophically injured.

States like Michigan that already have stretched finances will be asked to pay for lifetime catastrophic care for people seriously injured in motorcycle accidents, as these motorcycle operators are shifted to Medicaid. That means taxpayers will be asked to foot the bills.

Here in Michigan, as in many other states, motorcycle helmet law repeal efforts are underway.

For those of you are unfamiliar with SB 291: This pending legislation would repeal Michigan’s nearly 40-year-old motorcycle helmet law requirement. If passed, SB 291 would allow Michigan motorcyclists who are at least 21 years old to ride without a helmet. SB 291 also requires motorcyclists to purchase only $20,000 in PIP No-Fault insurance coverage — a strange amount because it’s guaranteed to be completely inadequate if anyone suffers serious personal injury in a motorcycle crash.

Presumably after this $20,000 PIP insurance requirement is exhausted – which in the case of a very serious motorcycle accident will be before the victim is released from the hospital – the cost of future lifetime care for that injured motorcycle operator will be shifted to Medicaid.

Why would any politician ever vote for a law that guarantees more people will die, more serious motorcycle accident injuries and essentially another “unfunded mandate” asking taxpayers to pay for the lifetime medical care of seriously injured motorcycle operators?

Sadly, the only reason appears to be because the people in favor of motorcycle helmet law repeal are single- issue voters, and politicians are afraid and appear willing to capitulate to them on an issue that otherwise makes no logical sense whatsoever.

The hypocrisy of the “freedom” and “liberty” arguments that the motorcycle repeal people speak of are explored in the video. Motorcycle helmet law repeal efforts are a dangerous and costly mistake.
