Statistics on drunk driving accidents in Oakland County, from our auto accident attorneys

Drunk driving accidents occur the most in the summer in Michigan, especially in July. I’ve been a frequent speaker at Law Day the last number of years, talking with Oakland County high school students about the dangers of drunk driving. With summer now here, I want to review drunk driving crashes and fatalities in Oakland County.

Our main law office is located in Farmington Hills.

The statistics come from a list of drunken driving auto accidents and fatalities by county in Michigan for 2009, provided by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. The list ranks Michigan counties by population and number of drunken driving car accidents and fatalities per capita.

Of all the counties in the state, Oakland County had the second most auto accidents involving drunk driving. The population is much higher in the tri-county area, especially Oakland. And there’s lots of traffic that accompanies the thriving businesses in cities like Southfield and Farmington Hills, as well as areas full of bars like Royal Oak.

Because of the more concentrated population, the ranking according to number of fatal crashes per capita is actually not as high in Oakland County as it was in many other Michigan counties.

These statistics go by an Oakland County population estimate of 1.25 million residents and 33,255 estimated auto accidents.

Drinking and driving accidents in Oakland County – Oakland County had the second-most most drinking and driving accidents, with 1,058 crashes involving drivers who had been drinking.

Drinking and driving fatalities in Oakland County – There were 11 drinking and driving fatalities in Oakland County, the fifth highest amount of drinking and driving fatalities in all of the Michigan Counties.

Oakland County’s fatal crash rate – The Oakland County rating for fatal car accidents involving drunk drivers was .0091, and it ranked 61 out of 64 Michigan counties.

Hopefully, knowing that these accidents involve real people who live and work near you, can put things into perspective. Drinking and driving accidents affect all of us.

Again, I’m asking you to follow the example of our auto accident attorneys and promise to never drink and drive. You can always call a loved one or a taxi for a ride.

  1. Wow throw this guy in jail for a long time… drunk drivers prove that they put no value on the life of other humans. This shouldn’t be tolerated especially when innocent people could have been saved…
