WHAT INSURANCE IS REQUIRED IN MICHIGAN FOR MOTORCYCLISTS?

What insurance is mandated for motorcyclists in Michigan?  The only insurance that is required is that a motorcycle carry basic liability coverage for a third party personal injury suit under MCL 500.3103(1).   The coverage must be at least the minimum liability under Michigan financial responsibility laws under MCL 500.3009(1).  An owner of a motorcycle can still purchase additional optional contractual insurances such as optional Michigan first-party no fault coverage, which includes medical benefits and wage loss, but this will usually be cost prohibitive for motorcyclists.  Hardly any motorcycle owners purchase this coverage in Michigan.

A motorcycle owner can also purchase other insurance coverage, such as uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  The personal injury lawyers at MichiganAutoLaw have helped many people who have suffered serious personal injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident in Michigan. We strongly recommend you purchase these additional coverages if you are an owner or registrant of a motorcycle and drive your motorcycle on Michigan roads.  We encourage you to read the information on uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage that we have included on this website, and to contact your agent to inquire into this additional, important optional insurance coverage.
